Shawnee Luminary Night Becomes a “New” Old Tradition

Long before there were twinkling Christmas lights, luminaries lit the way to front doors each Christmas. In the spirit of the holiday, Shawnee neighborhoods will light up the sky for all to enjoy Tuesday, December 14th from 6 – 9 p.m.

This is the fifth year for the event after a 20-year hiatus. Shawnee Living partnered with residents in Indianbrook, Timberfield and Wildbrook neighborhoods last year to bring back the age-old tradition. And with almost 400 homes participating in this year’s light show, Publisher Jodie Robinson promises residents won’t be disappointed. More than 5,000 paper bags filled with sand and white candles will silently line the streets that night.

“Christmas is about creating traditions. We hope this becomes one for not only Shawnee families who live in our neighborhoods, but for those who are simply seeking out the peace and beauty of the season,” says Robinson. “It’s a way to escape the hustle and bustle of the season and something we hope to continue for many years to come."

A $5 donation is encouraged, plus any non-perishable food and personal care items you'd like to donate to help support the West Ohio Food Bank.

For every $1 raised, the West Ohio Food Bank can provide six meals to those who are hungry.

As you exit Indianbrook, look for our friends at the Basement Doctor and turn in your donation. Shawnee Station will be gifting a special offer to each donating vehicle to stop by their new location and redeem.

Chief Supermarket will be joining us once again to spread holiday cheer and Christmas cookies to visitors. Find them on Hopi Trail.

N & H Concessions & Kettle Corn will be offering each car a sample of their delicious flavors: kettle or caramel. You may purchase additional bags for $7 each or 2 for $12. Find them set up where Abnaki and Tiqua Trail meet.

Find Santa & his helpers on Keresan Trail. Print off a letter, bring them to luminaries & Santa will put them in his mailbox. Thank you to our friends at The Basement Doctor for sponsoring this activity.

We have no control over the weather and need to plan for wind, rain, ice or other poor conditions that will make the event less than desirable for your family and ours. We take a lot of time planning, organizing and facilitating this event and want it to be amazing.

Please sign up for our text alerts in case of inclement weather. Text #holidaylights to 419-741-4438. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, our rain date will be December 15th.
